The flowers of Hedychium coronarium are large and fragrant on tropical-appearing plants which like hot and humid summers and consistently moist soils. It will grow best in zones 8-10 but may do well in zone 7 in protected areas with a heavy winter mulch. Hedychium means "sweet snow," which may refer to the fragrant white blooms, or to the white insides of the edible, spicy tubers.

If grown in containers in cooler areas, they should be overwintered indoors in a greenhouse or cool, dry, frost-free location.

Butterfly ginger stalks emerge from a thick, slowly growing rhizome and grow skyward through the spring and summer. In late summer, pinecone-like buds form atop the thick 5' tall stems. Starting in midsummer, the white (with a central yellow blotch), 2" wide, butterfly-shaped flowers of Hedychium coronarium begin to open, a few each day, perfuming the air with a rich honeysuckle-like fragrance until frost. Hedychium coronarium is a real attention-getter in the summer garden. Slightly moist, well-drained soils produce the best flowering.

Listing is for one healthy, freshly dug to order rhizome with one eye from our garden. These beautiful flowers come into bloom in mid-to-late season, when most other lilies and perennials have finished blooming. It doesn't take many seasons for the rhizomes to spread and they make an eye-catching display! Wonderfully fragrant and hard to find late summer/early fall blooming perennial/rhizome.

When ginger lilies are in bloom, hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinating insects are frequent visitors.

Rhizomes establish quickly when planted. When received, keep moist in a shaded area, but plant as soon as possible.
